July 28, 2010 5:30 pm Travel and LeisureClark Airbase as well as the ground had been originally set up in 1903 in Sapang Bato and called Fort Stotsenburg (in honor of the late Col. Stotsenburg who died in battle). Even though the place was to fulfill a variety of functions, its main role became that of giving grounds for the Air Force, which began with the designation from the Clark Field for their planes in 1919. In the 1930s the base was utilised as a landing facility for bomber planes, but during World War II, much more fighter planes have been deployed to the area as the American military went to war against Japan. In 1942 the Japanese had been able to occupy the base. It was in 1945 near the end of the war that the Americans were able to recover the base. After World War II, the base was also utilised for various purposes in the course of the Cold War.
