Modern Technology and the Tomato
February 28, 2010 8:56 am Computers and TechnologyBefore a tomato is ever ready to appear in a grocery store, ready for discriminating consumers, it has probably made a long journey, with the help of technology. Some tomatoes are still grown, harvested, and shipped by hand but most are processed through plants which use technology to clean, sort and even for tomato packing. This is accomplished by using advanced equipment which handles the tomatoes gently and carefully, but is still accurate enough to sort them. All of this takes place in a sanitary environment which has to meet strict health codes. Finally the vegetables are packed carefully by type, size, destination and other criteria, and sent on their way.
